Rooibos (pronounced ROY-boss) is a GREAT choice for brewing kombucha for those with caffeine sensitivity (since it is caffeine-free)!

The flavor of kombucha brewed with rooibos is uniquely sweet and earthy. Even if you’re not caffeine sensitive, I would recommend adding rooibos to your kombucha brewing rotation to experiment and enjoy the delicious possibilities.

Rooibos is an herbal tea grown in South Africa, whose name means “red bush.”

Loose Leaf Rooibos Tea

While other main forms of tea, such as black or green tea, all have significant caffeine content inherent to the leaf, Rooibos tea is an herbal tea so it has no caffeine. This makes it a refreshing start to the day and also a nice treat to look forward to at night or after dinner.

Brewing Instructions:

To enjoy as a cup of tea: steep 1 tsp of tea in boiling hot water for 3-5 minutes. Add milk and sugar if desired.
To brew for kombucha: Use 2 TBSP tea per gallon of kombucha, Steep for a minimum of 10 minutes in about 2 cups of hot water. Then, dilute with cool water until it reaches room temperature before pitching your culture.
