Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a versatile filtration medium used by brewers and winemakers. DE removes yeast, proteins, and impurities from beer and ensures a clearer, more refined final product. Its use in filter cakes boosts flow rate during filtration, preventing clogging and enhancing efficiency. DE’s ability to capture particles as small as 1 micron significantly improves beer quality and clarity.
In wine and cider production, DE acts as a clarifying agent. When added to the fermenter, it binds to positively charged particles like proteins, yeast, and bacteria, which are then removed as the liquid settles. Brewers also use DE to improve the stability and cling of beer foam by removing foam-negative substances such as lipids.
